Lancashire in Old Photographs (Britain in Old Photographs series) Local History - books, booklets and guides : Lancashire

by Catherine Rothwell

Paperback in Very Good condition with light wear.

Published by Sutton Publishing - reprint 2004. 160 pages. 17.3cm x 24.4cm.

Catherine Rothwell puts the old County of Lancashire under the microscope in Lancashire in Old Photographs, and reveals surprising and little-known facts. The 273 illustrations cover people and incidents in 181 towns, cities and villages adding up to a picture of the old County Palatine almost 100 years old. The first type of cloth produced in Lancashire was 'Blackburn Grey' and the changes in a county given over almost entirely to cotton manufacture, coal mining, chemicals and engineering have been enormous. Profound changes have also taken place in the great cities of Manchester and Liverpool, now lost to Lancashire.

Only old photographs of the streets, buildings, houses, parks and of the people themselves can call these changes sharply into focus, bringing home how much has been lost and gained.
