MIXED MEDIA
When more than one medium is used to complete a painting it is referred to as 'mixed media'. This can be something as simple as pencil and watercolour, or it can involve several media such as acrylic, rice paper, ink and watercolor. In this book I have chosen to work with six different media combinations which are some of the most popular. The paints I have chosen are all water-soluble. This may be the trend because of convenience as well as their brilliance and the suitability of their working together. Much of the art in water-soluble material today is mixed media; however, mixed media is not a new idea. Artists have been mixing media since art first began as we know it. Each time a new media was introduced or discovered it was a challenge to use it along with other media already at hand. Part of the ongoing attraction for artists is the search for richer surfaces and personal expression. Continual experimenting will expand your knowledge and can be a most rewarding adventure.
This book will give you some guidelines to begin with. I hope it will also encourage you to complete a painting with whatever medium is necessary to make it an acceptable piece of art.
