Phyllis Hostler began her career as a teacher, but her interest in education broadened to cover the whole field of child behaviour and personality. She therefore embarked on a specialized course of study, taking a B.A. Honours Degree in Psychology and Philosophy at University College, London, an Honours Course in Social Psychology, followed by training and work for the Academic Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology at the Tavistock Clinic, and an M.A. at King's College, London, her thesis for which, 'Children's Conceptions of Adult Life', involved research into the thoughts of children from 5 to 18 years of age. She was programme assistant for Senior English in the B.B.C. Schools Department, but marriage and the care of her son determined her present occupation as writer, lecturer, and consultant psychologist in private practice. She has been employed by the Central Council of Health Education, London and Middlesex County Councils as lecturer to varied parent and teacher groups and to magazines and newspapers. 'Nursery World' readers know her well by name for her numerous articles and anonymously as the Child Psychologist who discusses the many behaviour problems sent in by mothers. Her appearances on television as psychologist in the B.B.C. Family Affairs panel have made her known to an even wider public.
