Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Hereford, accuses Thomas Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, of high treason and the murder of the Duke of Gloucester. The King appoints a day for them to settle the dispute in mortal combat, but when the combat is about to begin the King summons the two men before him. Mowbray is sentenced to perpetual banishment, and Bolingbroke to banishment for six years. Bolingbroke's father, old John of Gaunt, dies, and the King unscrupulously seizes his wealth to pay for the Irish War. Bolingbroke comes back to demand his heritage, and as leader of the rebellion against the King's evil rule. Richard is deserted by his soldiers, and surrenders. He is brought to London and abdicates in favour of Bolingbroke, who now becomes Henry IV. Richard is taken away to prison at Pomfret Castle, where he is murdered.
