Of all the accounts written about the Second World War, none are more compelling than the personal diaries of those who lived through it.
Beginning in August 1939, and ending a year later with the Battle of Britain and the start of the Blitz, reading We Are At War is to sense for yourself a nation's fear as a terrible conflict develops.
The book is based on diaries sent to the Mass Observation project, which was set up in the 1930s to record everyday lives. The project aimed to record everyday life in Britain through a panel of around 500 untrained volunteer observers who either maintained diaries or replied to open-ended questionnaires (known as directives).
