This year (1989) the City of London celebrates the 800th anniversary of its mayoralty. Since 1189 there have been 660 Mayors of London - some famous; many noteworthy though little known outside the City; a few notorious. They range from Henry FitzAilwyn, who became Mayor in Richard the Lionheart's reign and remained so till his death some twenty years later, through Nicholas Brembre, who was hanged at Tyburn, Richard Whittington, who was chosen three times, John Wilkes, the radical MP, journalist and opponent of George III, Sydney Waterlow, noted philanthropist to the modern Lord Mayors.

Since 1215 in King John's reign, London's Mayors have been elected by its citizens at a ceremony that is still held annually. Many have been wealthy and successful merchants and financiers who have made a vigorous contribution to the nation's development, fostering trade and exploration; founding schools and hospitals; and promoting the City as one of the world's great financial centres.

'My Lord Mayor' is the official octocentennial publication of the City of London. Fully illustrated in colour with exclusive material from the Guildhall Library, the book traces the contribution of successive Lord Mayors to the nation's history. It describes the colourful traditions marking the mayoral year; the unique election, spectacular Lord Mayor's show and splendid banquets in Guildhall and Mansion house. Valerie Hope's portrait of the City of London's mayoralty will make absorbing reading and provide the ideal souvenir for the 800th Anniversary.
